Not far from Maple Knoll Apartments is the Indiana Historical Society. This unique museum connects people to the past by preserving and sharing the state’s history. It welcomes thousands of visitors every year and is a great way for newcomers to learn about the state, and for born and bred Hoosiers to reconnect.

Established in 1830, the society is a Smithsonian affiliate, and it’s known for its research library on the history of Indiana and the Old Northwest. There is much to see and do, including exploring these permanent exhibits:

Destination Indiana

Destination Indiana is a fascinating exhibit featuring stories from the state’s 92 counties. Using innovative touchscreen technology, it includes more than 300 journeys. Learn about Indiana’s place in everything from the Civil War to agriculture and rail transportation.

Cole Porter Room

Reminiscent of New York’s famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, the Cole Porter Room takes everyone back to a 1940s cabaret setting. Born in Peru, Indiana, Cole Porter was a talented composer and songwriter who conquered Broadway and Hollywood with his witty songs. He’s famous for tunes such as Night and Day and I Get a Kick Out of You. All totaled, he wrote more than 800 songs before his passing in 1964. This exhibit tells fascinating tales from his storied career, and an elegantly dressed interpreter performs Porter’s standards.

Indiana Colts: The Exhibit

Learn how football grew out of the rugby fields of Ivy League schools into a game loved by millions. The Indiana Colts have taken on opponents since 1984, and the team is known for its inspiring coaches and heart-stopping games. This exhibit includes memorabilia, player interviews, and video of the Colts in action.
